Last Tues, my Great-grandmother died. Before she died, she was diagnose with some disease, in the past 2-3 years, which nobody wanted to tell me. As a result, she couldn't recognize anyone and was bedridden. She couldn't walk or speak much as well. Hence, in the recent years I couldn't and didn't communicate with her. After she died, I was filled with remorse. I felt I should have visited her more often instead of complaining that I'm tired after work and stuff and stuff. I should have done something more. And what made things worse is that I can no longer see her on earth and in heaven. She must be cursing me in hell now.
Anw, on the day (and the following day which) she died, my grandmother had to attend to the preparation of the wake. She then passed the operations of the provision shop to my uncle, me and my brother. I had to commence duty at 7am, on the following day after my Great-grandmother had passed away .
Then the day came and I reached Chinatown MRT, the closest station to my grandmother's shop. As I walked down the shop houses and footpath, I had this nostalgic feeling. Everything instantly became so familiar to me. It felt as if I've walked the route (to the shop) a thousand times and I could do it with my eyes closed. Memories of this place started to pour in- The things that I've seen and done. I remembered seeing the fresh corpse of a lady who jumped off a building. She was bound to her children with red strings. It was widely circulated in the news that time. I would get reminded of that scene every time I passed that place.
Following that, I then went on to help my uncle with the shop business. Many people bought fruits and newspapers. Cigarettes were also one of the bestsellers there, which is kinda sad. Though prices for cigarettes kept increasing, the number of smokers doesn't decrease. Anyway, shortly after, my brother came to join me ( he was late). We then went to do some home deliveries to several customer. It was fun.. haha.. compared to sitting in the shop and feedin mosquito.. haha..
That was roughly all for a day's operation in the afternoon. After that, I had to rush to work and then do "guard duty" for the funeral wake. It was really, really tiring but I really thank God for giving me strength to last through the whole day - working in 2 different shops, staying up all night to guard the wake area and a friend to keep me company at night!!
